Our intensive week-long workshop is a deep dive into the practical art of straw bale construction. You’ll be on-site for the build of the Straw Budio, gaining hands-on experience by contributing to a live project. We focus on code-approved methodology, ensuring that the skills you take home are not just beautiful, but structurally sound and compliant with modern building standards.
By the end of the week, you’ll have a holistic understanding of how to manage a natural build—from the physics of the walls to the logistics of the job site.
While a single week isn't enough to master every trade required for a finished building, it is the perfect window to demystify the "straw bale envelope." We focus on transferable techniques that you can scale to your own studio, home, or barn. If your personal project involves specific elements we aren't installing that week (like a specific foundation type), we’ll hold dedicated sessions to discuss those options and provide the resources you need to move forward.
We blend "on-the-spot" lectures with dirty-hands labor to ensure the knowledge sticks. Here is what we will cover:
Precision Stacking: Techniques for creating stable, plumb, and tight-fitting straw walls.
The Art of the Knot: Mastering the speed-cinching and re-tying of bales to fit custom gaps without losing compression.
Structural Framing: How to integrate "toe-ups," box beams, and bale stops to keep the building to code.
Shaping & Aesthetics: Using chainsaws and trimmers to create those iconic soft curves, "nichos," and organic transitions.
Electrical & Plumbing: Navigating the "how-to" of running wires and pipes through straw without compromising the insulation or fire safety.
Openings: Waterproofing and framing for windows and doors to prevent moisture infiltration.
Cabinetry & Fixtures: How to securely "dead-man" or anchor heavy items (like cabinets or shelves) into a straw wall.
Lath & Plaster Prep: Preparing the bale surface with wire mesh and proper "stitching" for maximum plaster adhesion.
Natural Plastering: Mixing and applying the first coats of lime or clay plaster to protect the building for generations.
Engineering & Codes: How to work with officials (and why we love Verdant Structural Engineers!).
Financing & Insurance: Strategies for getting your sustainable project funded and covered.
Project Management: Tips for acting as your own General Contractor and scheduling subcontractors who may be new to straw bale.
We believe the best learning happens in the "in-between" moments. Whether we’re at the work face or sitting around the Tiki Bar in the evening, we host endless Q&A sessions. No question is too specific—bring your blueprints, your sketches, and your "what-if" scenarios. We’ll discuss everything from off-grid solar arrays to the nuances of carbon-sequestering materials.
